Marc Cucurella has openly criticized Chelsea FC’s youth-focused project, warning that it could be holding the team back from competing for major trophies.

The Spanish left-back admitted he understands the club’s long-term vision of signing young talents, but questioned its effectiveness in the present. He said that for players aiming to win big titles, the approach can be frustrating and even discouraging.

What did Cucurella say about Chelsea’s project?

Cucurella pointed to Chelsea’s heavy defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League as a clear example of the issue at the club. He argued that the squad lacked experienced players capable of handling high-pressure matches.

He said,

"For all of us who want to win big things, moments like this make you feel discouraged.nSigning young players only might complicate achieving those goals. When games matter, we are still a bit away from the top level.”

He stressed that relying only on young players can “complicate” ambitions of winning elite competitions, emphasizing that experience is crucial in decisive moments.

Cucurella also criticized instability at the club, including frequent managerial changes. He suggested that such decisions disrupt team cohesion and preparation, further impacting performances.

Cucurella isn’t rejecting the youth project outright, but he’s clearly pushing for a better mix of youth and experienced players if Chelsea Football Club wants immediate success.
