Manchester United have been dealt a double injury setback ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid, with Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo ruled out of the encounter.
The Red Devils head coach, Michael Carrick, confirmed that both players have remained in Manchester after picking up fitness issues during Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Carrick confirmed during his press conference ahead of tha game that both players arenoy available.
“They haven't travelled. Luke and Kobbie had issues in the game on Saturday, so we're kind of working through that to see where it looks like. At the moment, they're not ready for the game tomorrow,”
The absence of the duo presents another challenge for United as they prepare to face Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Shaw’s absence is particularly concerning for United, who are already dealing with injuries to fellow full-backs Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui.
With several defensive options unavailable, Carrick may have to rely on Diogo Dalot to cover the left-back position, while young players could also be considered as alternatives. Meanwhile, Mainoo’s absence leaves United with another gap to address in midfield. The England international featured for the full 90 minutes against Tottenham despite having previously withdrawn from the England squad after picking up a knock.
United will need to adjust their plans as they travel to Madrid for a challenging European fixture. Atlético, managed by Simeone, are known for their defensive organisation and intensity, making the absence of two first-team players a significant concern for the visitors.
However, United have received some positive news, with defender Matthijs de Ligt travelling with the squad after recovering from a lengthy back injury. His return could provide Carrick with an additional defensive option. Manchester United will hope to overcome their injury problems and deliver a strong performance against Atlético Madrid as they continue their Champions League campaign.
