Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained knee ligament damage during Uruguay's 1-0 defeat to Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 25-year-old was stretchered off before half-time after an awkward collision with teammate Mathías Olivera, leaving the pitch in visible distress. Following medical assessments, Manchester United revealed that Ugarte's injury is still being evaluated to determine the full extent of the damage, treatment plan, and expected recovery timeline.
However, the club has not confirmed whether the injury involves the ACL or another knee ligament, early reports suggest he could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines if scans reveal significant ligament damage.
The statement read,
"Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury whilst representing Uruguay in Friday's World Cup group-stage match against Spain. Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale. Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way."
The setback is a major blow for both Manchester United and Uruguay. Ugarte had featured in all three of Uruguay's World Cup group-stage matches before the injury ended his tournament. The Red Devils now have to reassess their midfield plans ahead of the new season depending on the outcome of his medical evaluations.
