Manchester City have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández in a blockbuster deal worth £125 million (€145 million).

The transfer matches the British transfer record currently held by Liverpool’s signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The deal brings an end to weeks of speculation surrounding Fernández’s future at Stamford Bridge.

City had maintained an interest in the 25-year-old midfielder and eventually returned with a late proposal on transfer deadline day. Fernández is reportedly set to undergo a medical before completing the move.

The arrival at the Etihad would also see him reunite with Enzo Maresca, his former Chelsea manager, who is now in charge of Manchester City. Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British record £106.8 million. Just over three years later, Chelsea are now set to receive an even larger fee for the World Cup-winning midfielder.

What does this transfer of Fernández mean to Chelsea?

The major challenge will now be finding a replacement before the transfer window closes. The club have been linked with several midfield options as they look to compensate for the departure of one of their most important players.

The transfer is expected to be one of the biggest stories of deadline day, with City securing a deal that could make Fernández one of the most expensive players in Premier League history.
