Lionel Messi is set to take another major step into football club ownership after reaching an agreement in principle to acquire Spanish second-tier club CD Eldense.
The former Barcelona who spent majority of his career in Spain is looking to invest back in that community as he is close to purchasing 100% of the shares currently held by Colombian investment group TH Soluciones Group S.A.S., which is Eldense’s majority shareholder.
The proposed takeover would see Messi become the sole owner of the LaLiga 2 club, adding another Spanish team to his growing football investment portfolio. However, the deal has not yet been officially completed, as the transaction still requires the completion of final legal and contractual procedures, including due diligence and mandatory authorisation from Spain’s High Council for Sports (CSD).
The potential Eldense takeover would be Messi’s second club investment in Spain this year. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner acquired full ownership of fifth-tier Spanish club UE Cornellà in April 2026.
A completed Eldense deal would therefore give the football icon control of two Spanish clubs competing at different levels of the football pyramid. Messi’s move into club ownership comes while he continues his playing career with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
What does this purchase means for Eldense?
Messi’s potential arrival comes at a challenging moment for Eldense as they currently sit 20th in the Segunda División and are still searching for their first league victory of the season. They have collected two points from their opening matches.
Eldense have, however, made significant progress in recent years. After spending a long period in Spain’s lower divisions, the club returned to the second tier and are now attracting major international attention because of Messi’s proposed takeover.

If the acquisition is completed, Messi's ownership could transform Eldense's profile both commercially and internationally. The presence of one of football's most recognisable figures could bring increased global exposure, new commercial opportunities and greater attention to the club's sporting development.
