Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to retire from international football, revealing that he personally asked the legendary forward to continue representing his country.

Ronaldo announced his retirement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year international career with Portugal. Jesus expressed his disappointment while speaking in an interview, he admitted that he wanted the 41-year-old forward to remain part of his plans but insisted that he respects his decision.

He said;

“I asked him to continue with me because I needed him by my side, but I have to accept his decision."

The Portugal manager also praised Ronaldo's contribution to the national team, describing him as a global icon and an inspiration to younger generations.

“Cristiano is a global icon, an example for Portugal and the national team. He is a player who has given so much to the national team over the years. He will always be a reference for our national team, our people and our history."

Jesus further revealed that he had arranged for a large photograph of Ronaldo to be placed in the auditorium of the Portuguese Football Federation, ensuring that young players would continue to look up to the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star. Ronaldo's retirement comes after weeks of tension between the forward and Jesus, following their disagreement during Portugal's recent international fixtures.

Despite the circumstances surrounding his departure, Ronaldo leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, having scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal. He also captained his country to the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles.

Although his international journey has come to an end, Ronaldo is expected to continue his professional football career at club level.
