The Nigerian Football Federation ( NFF) has unveiled Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Finidi was appointed the new head coach of the national football team as a replacement for Jose Peseiro who left the national team after leading the Super Eagles to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
George had been in interim control of the Super Eagles for their two friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in Morocco last month. He guided Nigeria to a 2-1 victory over rivals Ghana to end an 18-year winless run against the Black Stars, before suffering a 2-0 defeat against Mali days later.
What did Finidi George say?
"I have worked hard for almost three years now I have been in Nigeria and I want to say I am grateful for this great opportunity given to me to manage the Super Eagles. It's not an easy job for anybody but I'm so happy, even short of words. For me, it is just to start working immediately which I've been doing even before signing this contract. I just want to say a big thank you for this great opportunity and I believe the God that has brought me here will make everything perfect. My job is to make Nigerians proud, the federation, as well for this great opportunity. I believe I will not let anybody down. I will do my best to make sure that we get the job done."
What do Nigerians expect from Finidi George?
Following the Super Eagles' second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Nigerians expect the team to do better at the 2025 edition but his immediate target will be securing qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA 2026 World Cup campaign.
