Following Nigeria's shocking 2026 WAFCON exit, here is how the Super Falcons can still qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup.
Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup have suffered a major setback, but the Super Falcons are not out of the race yet.
The 10-time African champions were knocked out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon on Sunday.
The defeat means Nigeria missed out on one of Africa’s four automatic tickets to next year’s World Cup in Brazil. The four WAFCON semi-finalists (Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon and Malawi) have secured those spots.
However, Nigeria still has a second route to the tournament.
Nigeria must beat South Africa
Following their quarter-final exit, the Super Falcons will enter the WAFCON continental play-offs alongside the other losing quarter-finalists, South Africa, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
Nigeria’s next assignment is against South Africa, with the winner securing one of Africa’s two remaining spots in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Off Tournament.
For the Super Falcons, the equation is simple: beat South Africa and keep the World Cup dream alive.
The match is therefore effectively a must-win for Nigeria, with defeat ending their hopes of making the 2027 tournament.
The final hurdle: FIFA’s play-off tournament
Even if Nigeria defeats South Africa, qualification will not be guaranteed.
The two African teams that emerge from the continental play-offs will join teams from other confederations in FIFA’s intercontinental play-off tournament.
According to FIFA, the first phase will take place in November and December 2026 and will feature six teams, two from Africa, two from Asia, one from South America and one from Oceania.
Only two teams from that first phase will progress to the final stage in February 2027.
The final phase will feature six teams competing across three knockout paths. Each path will produce one World Cup qualifier, meaning three teams will ultimately earn the final three tickets to Brazil 2027.
Nigeria's route to Brazil 2027
For the Super Falcons, the road is now considerably tougher:
1. Beat South Africa
Nigeria must overcome Banyana Banyana in the continental play-off.
2. Secure one of Africa’s two play-off spots
A victory would send Nigeria into FIFA’s intercontinental play-off tournament.
3. Win through the global play-offs
Nigeria would then have to navigate the November/December first phase and, if successful, the final play-off phase in February 2027.
4. Claim one of the final three tickets
Winning their final knockout pathway would send the Super Falcons to Brazil.
The stakes are particularly high for Nigeria because the Super Falcons have appeared at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.
Missing out on Brazil 2027 would therefore end one of the longest-standing World Cup attendance records in African women's football.
The defeat to Cameroon has closed the door to automatic qualification, but it has not closed the door to Brazil. The Super Falcons must now win their remaining play-off matches and produce their best football when the margin for error is at its smallest.
