Former Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has reportedly explained why he decided to resign from his role with the national team.

Renowned Nigerian sports journalist Colin Udoh explained on his Instagram live story why Finidi George left his role as Super Eagles coach. According to him, the former Enyimba coach submitted his resignation letter after learning that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) decided to appoint a technical adviser without involving him in the decision.

He stated that the NFF and Finidi had a meeting to discuss the poor run in the two World Cup qualifying games against Benin Republic and South Africa.

However, nobody informed him about the decision to appoint a foreign technical adviser until he read about it on the internet. After waiting for two days with no communication from the NFF, he decided to send in his resignation letter.

What does this mean for the Super Eagles?

The NFF would have to race against time in looking for a new coach for the Super Eagles before the next round of qualifying games for the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.

The 53-year-old was appointed last month ( May 2024) ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic. Nigeria is currently fifth in the group with three points behind Zimbabwe in the last position.
