Four years after the ongoing war started between Russia and Ukraine, there are reports that FIFA is set to lift the ban on the Russian Football Federation which will see top-flight football return to the country.
There have been reaction by the football stakeholders in the world who have frowned at the decision by FIFA to lift the ban on Russia.
FIFA president says the ban should lifted immediately as it has only created more hatred and divisionThe truth is they can’t hide their glaring hypocrisy for nkot banning lsraeI which is far worse than Russia.
What happened between Russia and FIFA?
Russia was suspended by FIFA/UEFA in February 2022 after its invasion of Ukraine; this ban means Russian national and club teams have been excluded from World Cups, European competitions, and other official tournaments since then. However, FIFA has not formally decided to reinstate Russia, and key governing bodies (including UEFA’s council) aren’t planning an immediate vote on it because many national associations oppose the idea.
There are reports saying that the FIFA leadership is personally in favour of reconsidering Russia’s status, but that’s not the same as an official reinstatement being approved.
Infantino’s stance is based on the belief that bans don’t help resolve political conflicts and that sport should stay open.
Many nations, especially in Europe and Ukraine, argue that Russia’s ongoing war makes any return to top-level competition inappropriate until peace is achieved.
FIFA’s president has suggested the ban on Russia should be reconsidered and possibly lifted, especially for youth teams but official reinstatement has not yet happened and remains very controversial within world football.
