FIFA has unveiled a historic new reward for future FIFA World Cup champions, introducing championship rings for the first time in the tournament's history.
The governing body of world football is adopting a tradition popular in major American sports leagues, with the victorious team at the FIFA World Cup set to receive specially designed championship rings alongside the iconic World Cup Trophy and winners' medals.
Under the new initiative, FIFA will produce 30 exclusive championship rings for members of the World Cup-winning team, recognising the players and key personnel who contribute to lifting football's biggest prize.
In addition to the champions' collection, FIFA will also release 1,996 commemorative rings for fans around the world. The number is a tribute to the year 1996, when FIFA first introduced the current World Cup champions' badge, adding another symbolic layer to the new collectible.
The move marks the first time in the tournament's 96-year history that World Cup winners will receive championship rings, bringing football closer to traditions seen in American sports such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, where championship rings have long served as lasting symbols of success.
The rings are expected to become highly sought-after memorabilia, offering supporters a chance to own a piece of World Cup history while giving champions a new keepsake to commemorate their achievement on football's biggest stage.
FIFA has yet to reveal the final design of the rings or provide details on pricing and availability for the fan edition.
