The head coach of D'Tigress, Rene Wakama has been named the best coach of the Paris 2024 Olympics games following the impressive performance of the Nigerian team.

The International Basketball Federation confirmed the award to Rene Wakama on its official X account on Sunday, August 11, 2024. D'Tigress came into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as the least-ranked team among all teams that qualified for the competition.

Rene Wakama led Nigeria to the quarter-finals making them the first African nation to reach the last eight of basketball events either men or women in the history of the Olympics. She achieved this feat beating the third-ranked Australia in their opening game of the group stage but lost to France in the second game.

Nigeria also stunned the world following an incredible win against another top-ranked team Canada. However, Nigeria were unable to go past the last eight after they were beaten by the United States of America 88-74 points.

She became the first female head coach of D’Tigress when she was appointed in 2023 and led the team to their fourth consecutive FIBA Afrobasket Women’s Championship in the same year.
