Nigeria’s D’Tigress suffered their second consecutive defeat at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup after Hungary secured a narrow 71–67 victory in their Group B encounter in Berlin on Saturday.
The West African team entered the game looking to recover from their disappointing 99–81 defeat to South Korea in their opening match. However, Hungary made a stronger start and established an early advantage, putting D’Tigress under pressure from the opening quarter.
Nigeria battled back as the game progressed and produced a much-improved performance, particularly in the final quarter. D’Tigress scored 25 points in the fourth period, giving themselves a chance to complete the comeback, but Hungary held their nerve to secure the four-point win.
The result leaves D’Tigress without a victory from their opening two Group B matches. With France still to come, Nigeria now faces a crucial final group-stage game as they look to keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages alive.
Coach Rena Wakama admitted after the defeat that her team was unable to get the job done against Hungary.
D’Tigress will need to quickly regroup and improve their execution in key moments. After two narrow opportunities to change the outcome slipping away, Nigeria must produce their best performance in their next game if they are to remain in contention at the World Cup.
