Nigeria’s D’Tigress have been eliminated from the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin after France defeated South Korea 95–69, ending Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
The elimination comes after D’Tigress suffered back-to-back defeats in Group B. Nigeria lost 99–81 to South Korea in their opening game before falling narrowly 71–67 to Hungary in their second match.
France’s victory over South Korea confirmed that Nigeria could no longer finish in one of the qualifying positions, even if Rena Wakama’s side were to defeat France in their final group game. The head-to-head tiebreaker would work against Nigeria in a potential points tie.
The early exit is a major disappointment for the reigning African champions, who entered the tournament hoping to build on their historic run at the 2024 Paris Olympics and potentially match or surpass their best-ever World Cup finish.
D’Tigress’ best performance at the World Cup remains their quarter-final appearance in 2018, when they finished eighth. They will now face France in their final Group B game, with pride at stake.
