On that occasion, he was clinically dead for several minutes before being successfully resuscitated by medical staff. He later received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and remarkably returned to professional football, going on to play for clubs including Manchester United and VfL Wolfsburg, while also continuing his international career with Denmark.
