Following the recent announcement by Chelsea FC, here is why the Blues might be forced to launch a bid for Manchester United's Harry Maguire in 2023.

In an official announcement today, Tuesday, July 18, 2023, Chelsea FC confirmed that centre-back Wesley Fofana has sustained a major injury that could keep the French international out of action for most of the 2023/2024 season set to kick-off in August 2023.

With this in mind, reports indicate that Chelsea might be forced to dive back into the transfer market in 2023 to search for a centre-back that can fill in the position and a name in the board's mind, according to Sky Sports, is former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

The reports by Chelsea on Fofana's injury stated, "Defender Wesley Fofana has undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery. The 22-year-old did not travel to America for the club's pre-season tour due to specialist medical assessments, which unfortunately confirmed that an operation would be required. Wesley will now begin his recovery and work with the club's medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase."

Although Chelsea still boasts of talented defenders such as Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill, the Blues are still looking to strengthen their side ahead of the new season. Fofana, who recently limited his comment section and deactivated his Twitter account, had recently returned from injury a few games before the end of the 2022/2023 season.

He is a player that the Blues would greatly miss in coming games. The announcement further raises questions about the fitness level of England international Reece James, who was also exempted from the squad ahead of the pre-season games in the US in what was attributed to illness.
