Barcelona confirm huge injury blow ahead of the January 2026 transfer window

Barcelona have announced a major injury blow which will see a key player miss out ahead of the January 2026 transfer window.

Barcelona have confirmed that Andreas Christensen has suffered a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, dealing a serious blow to both the player and the club.

The injury occurred during Saturday’s training session after an awkward twist of the knee. Medical tests revealed the extent of the damage, and Barcelona have decided on a conservative treatment plan, meaning surgery is not required at this stage. The defender is expected to be out for several months, with his exact return date depending on how well his recovery progresses.

This setback adds to what has already been a difficult season for Christensen. He previously missed matches against Olympiacos, Club Brugge, Real Madrid and Elche due to a calf issue, and had only recently returned after a lengthy absence caused by an Achilles injury. The ACL problem rules him out of Sunday’s trip to Villarreal and could keep him sidelined longer if rehabilitation does not go as planned.

Christensen’s absence further reduces Barcelona’s defensive options, with Ronald Araújo also still unavailable. Hansi Flick is likely to rotate players such as Pau Cubarsí, Eric García and Gerard Martín, while Jules Koundé may be asked to fill in across the back line.
