Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid: Diego Simeone confirms travelling squad

Head coach Diego Simeone has named a strong travelling squad ahead of the Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid must-win UCL semifinal fixture.

Julian Alvarez has been named in Atletico Madrid’s travelling squad for Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second-leg meeting with Arsenal, although there are still questions over whether the Argentine forward will be fit enough to start.

Diego Simeone’s side are heading to London for a decisive European fixture at the Emirates Stadium, with the tie still open after the first leg ended 1-1 in Madrid. Atletico have now released their squad list, and the update brings both positive and concerning news for the Spanish side.

Nicolas Gonzalez and Pablo Barrios have not been included, meaning both players will miss the trip as they continue their recovery from injury. Their absence is a blow for Simeone, especially with the game expected to demand intensity, control and depth in midfield.

There is better news in defence, as Jose Maria Gimenez has travelled with the squad. The Uruguayan defender missed the first leg against Arsenal as well as Atletico’s weekend match against Valencia, but his inclusion suggests he is close to returning. However, after several games on the sidelines, it remains unclear whether Simeone will risk him from the start.

The biggest talking point is Alvarez. The forward was forced off during the first leg against Arsenal and was left out of the Valencia match at the weekend. Reports indicate that he has travelled with the group, but his chances of starting will depend on how his ankle responds before kick-off.

Giuliano Simeone is also part of the travelling party, although his fitness will also be assessed before the match. Aside from the unavailable players, Atletico are expected to have most of their key options available for selection.
