As the deadline for AFCON 2023's squad list announcement and confirmation draws closer, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are reportedly set to change their list of players.
Reports indicate that Nigeria might have to make two changes to their released 25-man squad list ahead of AFCON 2023 due to injury concerns. Midfielders Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi might miss AFCON 2023 after it was confirmed that the two players who had made the 25-man squad shortlist picked up a knock in their fixtures for their club side Leicester City.
Although there is no official confirmation of the status and the severity of their injury, media outlets are of the opinion that Nigeria's head coach might be forced to make the change on or before Wednesday, January 3, 2024, ahead of the competition in anury 13, 2024 in Ivory Coast.
With doubts initially raised about the quality of the squad the recent development puts more scrutiny on José Peseiro and his team selection process.
José Peseiro shared his thoughts on the possibility of the Super Eagles of Nigeria winning AFCON 2023. He stated, “The Eagles’ group is not easy because hosts Ivory Coast is one of the favourites for the tournament due to their good squad and that they are playing at home. Equatorial Guinea did better than Nigeria at the last AFCON, they got to the quarter-finals and Guinea-Bissau beat us at home in the qualifiers so it’s going to be a tough tournament, a tough job for us because we need to put in focus everytime, every minute and every seconds in the match.”
