5 Talking points from Tottenham vs. Manchester United Premier League match

Tottenham Hotspur came into this game looking to get their first win of the season under new manager Ange Postecoglou when they hosted Manchester United at White Hart Lane on Saturday, August 19, 2023.

Spurs got a point in their opening game of the season against Brentford, while the Red Devils defeated Wolves in their game at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were looking to make it two wins from two in the Premier League this season, as they travel to Spurs on Saturday. The last time they achieved such a feat was under Jose Mourinho during the 2017/18 season.

Here are five talking points from the game;

(1) Mason Mount:

The former Chelsea midfielder has failed to find his feet in the team since he moved to Old Trafford. He failed to create good chances for the attacking players either from open play or set pieces. Of Manchester United players to have played at least an hour of Premier League football in the 2023/24, Mason Mount has the fewest touches (56 in 153 minutes).

(2) Andre Onana:

The Cameroonian International has been exceptional since he joined the Rex Devils during the 2023 summer transfer window. Erik Ten Hag signed the player because of his ball-playing skills as a goalkeeper. He made some amazing saves in the first half to deny Spurs from going ahead in the break. However, his guard was let down in the second half when Tottenham scored two goals past him which saw the London team leave with maximum points.

(3) Marcus Rashford:

The English international failed to show the class that he was known of by Manchester United supporters. Ten Hag played him in the number nine position which does not always suit his style of play. United supporters will hope Rashford gets to be played in his natural position as they progress into the season.

(4) Creativity:

Tottenham Hotspur took advantage of every chance that they created in the second half. Ange Postecoglou built the strength of his team around his right and left-wing backs which is possibly going to be how his team will play going forward in the rest of the season.

(5) Pape Matar Sarr:

The midfielder was torn in the flesh of Manchester United for the time he was on the pitch. He had 46 touches in the game and also scored the opening goal in the game which gave Tottenham confidence going into the rest of the match.

Tottenham won the game 2-0, this is their first victory over Manchester United for the first time since 2018.
