There has never been a prouder moment for a Nigerian than now. We can now confidently say that Afrobeats is taking over the world, although one step at a time. It is quite amazing that our Nigerian acts are functioning within the same space as other international acts, competing while also collaborating with them. Intriguing, I must say.

The Nigerian sound is heavily breaking into the global market, entering into charts in the US and Europe. There is a proliferating interest in the sound and the culture which has led to high demand for Afrobeats. There has since been a number of international acts who have made use of the Afro sauce to prepare dishes for their audience to consume including Drake, Skepta, Tory Lanez, Future, and many others.

Acting as frontliners, musicians like Wizkid, Davido, Tekno, Runtown, Mr. Eazi, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, and a few others have assumed a crucial position in the international scene, setting up camp and promoting the Nigerian sound. As the sound (and its creators) are being integrated into the market, the audience is longing to experience them in live performances.

Coachella

Coachella is one of the largest, most famous and most prestigious festivals in the world which is held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The attendance is usually huge, with a record of over 250,000 people attending the one in 2017. Fans and music lovers come out in multiple folds to watch their favorite acts perform and the artists, on their end, put in maximum efforts to make their sets extremely lively.

Principally, artists that perform are from popular genres including Rock, pop, indie, hip-hop, electronic dance music. However, there was a little change this year as some Afrobeats acts were added to the lineup. This fascinated a lot of Afrobeats lovers who took to social media to express their excitement in seeing acts like Mr. Eazi and Burna Boy rock the stage alongside international artists such as Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, Mia, Childish Gambino, Wiz Khalifa, and others.

As much as it would have been a dream come true to attend the Coachella and watch the artists perform live, I completely enjoyed streaming the festival and was blown away by the performances of Mr. Eazi and Burna Boy. I found it intriguing that the audience cheered as Eazi and Burna performed respectively.

Although both artists performed differently, they did spectacularly well, thrilling the audience with their unique sound. Mr. Eazi performed a motley of his songs like Surrender, Skintight, Open And Close while Burna Boy performed many of hit songs such as Ye, Dangote, Gbona, Tonight, Killin Dem.

It means a lot that the Nigerian sound is seriously catching on such that our acts are performing at a festival as huge as Coachella. There’s only one way for Afrobeats henceforth and it’s forward. The portal to international acclaim has opened for Nigerian musicians and you love to see it.
