Tuchel spoke in a press conference after the game on Chelsea's website, where he confirmed Mendy sustained an injury in the game against Zenith St. Petersburg.

He said the team went with Kepa because he was fully fit than Mendy and it was a logical decision to make when the team selection was made.

We tried everything throughout the week and yesterday in training, but it was so-so. It comes from the last-minute kick against Zenith in the Champions League, so it's very painful and he felt it.

He was not 100 percent comfortable to go for a full stretch or to land on it so we decided to go for 100 per cent, which was Kepa, and have Edou with us to be supportive and to have good energy. I'm happy that Kepa played a crucial role today to have a clean sheet because it's what he deserved.

Chelsea plays Aston Villa next in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021, and Kepa is expected to be in goal for the Blues.
