This decision was announced after a meeting was held between both bodies on Monday, February 28th, 2022. The bodies confirmed that they stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine following the current invasion by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters. Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.

The decision to ban the Russian national teams and clubs is because of the recent attack on Ukraine by the Russian government. Sweden, Poland, and the Czech Republic called the attention of FIFA last week stating that they will not play in the World Cup qualifying series that had Russia included in it.
