Tay took everyone by surprise after he released his debut mixtape, Passportwhich received very positive reviews from critics and his new acquired fans. His style of music, voice and delivery brings a breath of fresh air to Nigerian music where countless artists are copying an obvious commercial sound. Read and Enjoy Tay talk about how he started making music and the vision of his future in music.
What is your name and how old are you?
My name is Austin Tay and I have been around for 17 years now.
At such a young age how are you able to make the type of music that you make? Lets start from the beginning; when did you start doing music and what led you to it?
I started music really young, I was actually kinda forced into music by my dad, he made me and my brothers attend music school in Lagos. I was at most 7 years old when I started playing classical piano but after Junior school I basically stopped because we moved from Lagos to Abuja… Until I found fruity loops studio online one day, then I made my first beat in JSS 3, it was absolutely terrible lol, It was a jerkin beat, well that’s what I intended it to be haha. I always used to sing to myself but the day I noticed that I could actually take singing seriously was when I sang for a girl and she cried and hugged me. I like to think that I’m an observer, so most of my music is from reinterpreted observations, I’m in love with any fusion.
So you produce, tell us how you learnt how to produce.
I learnt production on youtube, and through experimentation.
Who are your musical influences and where did you get this your soothing texture and catchy sound from?
There are so many, P. Morris, James Blake, Chris Brown, Phil Gerus, Lido, Masterkraft, Sarz, 20syl, Jhene Aiko, Alt-J, Majid Jordan, Sade, Sam Cooke….the lineup is long. My voice has always been soft and I don’t know how to shout lol
When did you make your first full song; written, composed and produced by Tay?
So while you were creating music in secondary school, how were you able to do it and juggles school with it. And How did your parents take this?
School was priority, I mean sometimes I would mess up on some tests to be honest, but it never made any significant difference on my final grades. School was and is good… My parents are music lovers and them stopping me from recording songs is like a fish flying, it never happened.
When did you decide that you were very good at music and what led you to create the Mixtape.
July 2013, I made a song called Sex Me, that song convinced me that I’m good and at the time I hadn’t made anything nearly as good as that. It really boosted my morale and the idea of my mixtape came. I think it was late 2013 October or November, the first song I made on Passport was PineAppleJuice, it was after I made it that I told myself to work on a Mixtape. At the time I just wanted to do 5 songs for promotional purposes, over time the idea expanded.
Your Mixtape PASSPORT dropped in April and it was received VERY WELL. Some people described it as the PERFECT Mixtape. Tell us how long it took you to put it together?
It took me 9 months, just like a baby lol.
How would you define your music? What genre of music?
Fusion, Dynamic, Westernised-Afro *Shouts to Mojeed*
