notjustOk hype will feature (or maybe not) the future heavy hitters in Naija music. Any material featured in this category will be from an unsigned or up & coming Nigerian/African artiste/producer/record label that boasts of nothing but promising content. There will only be ONE post a month in this category.
If you have or know of anyone’s music that you feel is a hit or any good, please send an email to the official notjustOk email (music-at-notjustok.com) with a link to their page or where we can download the song.
It’s a new year 2011. As you all know, every month we feature a talented up & coming artiste as the notjustOk Hype. We’re kicking off this segment this year with a very special star on the rise… and he goes by the name: SAMKLEF!!! He’s primarily a producer, but also thrives as a recording artiste. He’s responsible for producing several hit singles from Sunnji Neji, Ruggedman, Durella, Vector, D’Prince, Skales, and particularly Wizkid!

notjustOk.com recently caught up with Samklef, and you can read the interview below. Let’s get to know him.
Tell me about yourself. What’s your real name and your background?
My name is Samuel Oguachuba. I’m a producer, song writer, and singer. I was born at the PWD Nigerian Airforce Barracks, Lagos. My dad was in the airforce before he passed on. I started my music career 5 yrs ago. Then I used to look up to Tuface. I learnt how to play the piano in church. I started playing in churches before I started producing. I worked with different production outfits and advert agencies like Sound Factory and EXP.
Today, you’re seen as one of the brightest young producers in Nigerian music. What would you consider your 1st hit production?
My life by Durella. I also did about 7 tracks, “Boom Boom”, “Ileke”, “Hustler” and a few others on Durella’s most recent album.
Durella – My Life

You seem to have a fanstatic relationship with Wizkid, considering the number of songs you guys have worked on together. How did this come about?
I met Wizkid through Skales. Skales connected me with Osagie who had previously heard “My Life” and she loved it, then she brought Wizkid over. “Tease Me” was done in 30minutes during a freestyle session. It was straight, it just came out; mixed and mastered in 30mins.
As you know, Lots of upcoming acts can’t afford Don Jazzy, so that’s where people like me come in.

I understand you released an album previously, but I never came across your materials “officially” till 2010. What’s the story on the old album? Is it still in the market?
Well, that album was dropped in February 2010 titled “Noni“. Although there was an earlier album titled “My Reality” released in 2008. Yes, Noni is still in the market.
Lots of people keep wondering what “Noni” means, ’cause you use it a lot. Please, break it down.
Noni means “On Point!”
What about “Nonilizing”, “Nonilified” etc. Do they all mean the same thing, and how about the usage?
Yes! Adjectives and verbs. Lol. When someone say you’re “Nonilified”, it means “you are on point!”
Now to your productions, You’ve worked with some of the hottest names in the industry. Which would you consider your best work till date?
I can’t really pick, because I put in the same energy in all my works.
As a producer, do you have your beats ready-made, and allow the artiste make their choice? Or do you create your beats depending on the song?
I listen to the song and the delivery of the artiste, then I create something that works.
Ok take us through “Jonzing World” with Jesse Jagz, Wizkid and D’Prince. How did that song come about?
D’Prince came with the idea of the song. He said he’s done it before but didn’t like it and wanted my touch. So we sat down, made a new beat and killed it Noni!
Klef Sound and partnering with Ace Stage Entertainment.
Tell us about your new “Nonilizing” album. I understand it hits the local market shortly. What should we expect, and what would you like to add ?
“Nonilizing” is a 13-track album. A remake of the first Noni album, but it comes with 6 new tracks. Artistes featured include Skales, Wizkid, D’Prince, Ice Prince, Olamide, B. Ranks, Q, Obvious, Vector and Ocube.
Finally, I’ll be opening my own studio on my birthday; 5th of February.
