DayJoo Releases New Single – Sailing
Fast rising Nigerian Rapper by name Ojowadeju Micah Agamah popularly known as DayJoo - pronounced “DayJur” early beginnings can be traced to a time back in high-school, when rapping along to Jay-Z’s “Encore”, and a host of other hard-hitting rap songs which at first was seen as a mere past-time. The seeds of a life in music were planted early on in life through numerous piano lessons and MUSON Centre performances, but it wasn’t until this period (circa 2008/09) where the idea of becoming a real artist started sprouting after partaking in.
His initial attempt at a rap song, a shrill but verbose rendition of his own version of Chiddy Bang’s “Mind Your Manners”(You’ll Never Do Better, 2014), would serve as a sign of things to come: verses packed with intricate rhyme-schemes and a fondness for taking his listeners on a journey through his stories. He would go on to drop a sizeable number of singles and a 4-track tape since then. For DayJoo, a writer first before donning rapper-tinted shades, every single word used in a verse isn’t by chance. Best believe that word was picked through careful consideration of the word’s meaning and how that word fits in the progression of the overall story. In this way, the main objective behind creating a song, for DayJoo, has always been to ensure the song is meaningful and heartfelt, even if that song is about women or having fun. A word that can be used to describe DayJoo’s songs would be ‘introspective’; always feeling the need to assess the state of his inner world and, by extension, the events that shape his existence as a Nigerian guy. This introspective nature is amplified by DayJoo’s introverted personality, making for a delicate balance between the need to be heard and an aversion to being seen, though he is quickly realizing that being heard is virtually inseparable from being seen in today’s internet-driven world. It would be interesting to see who DayJoo becomes from this point of realization.
