Born on January 24th and originally from Lagos state, Olubunmi Patrick Marinho was raisedin Ibadan. His natural flair for music became apparent in the first year of secondary school when he was top of his class in Music. He attended International School Ibadan before moving on to the U.K to further his education. As a boy Slick P grew up listening to his father’s Motown music collection which inspired him to become a DJ. His great grandfather and Nigerian pioneer Herbert Macaulay was also an accomplished violinist providing further inspiration to Slick P.
Slick P first started MCing at drum n bass nights and rap battles in the nineties London and Surrey hip-hop scene. He was one of the founders and residents of now legendary hip-hop nights in Guildford, Surrey while studying Chemical Engineering at university. As a Hip-hop DJ, his ability to entertain crowds with his witty and crowd controlling freestyles stood out. He was resident DJ/MC at Bojanglez Nightclub, Guilford for 6 years and Le Bidule, London for 1 year. Slick, Cruz and E-dub all university friends then known as ‘The Southside Flava’ also performed at numerous clubs, gigs and concerts all over the U.K.
After 7 years doubling as an MC and DJ, Slick P gave up the turntables to concentrate on the lyrical side were his talents really lay. As a club host MC he was always in demand and soon started doing international raves as well. At this point Slick P had not recorded any songs relying solely on his freestyles and crowd motivating skills to entertain audiences. He has dazzled Hip Hop, Garage, Reggae and Soul crowds all over the world with his boss man vocal tones. He was on regular rotation for Badbizznez, Twice as Nice and Trinity Events.
Slick combined his passion for music with his other talent in Information Technology after graduating from university. As a highly skilled and certified technical consultant Slick P worked in many countries all over the world. He of course got involved in the local music everywhere he visited be it Mexico, Germany or Paris. The influences from his travels can be heard on tracks like International Citizen, Jaiye and Business Plan. His work in information technology led him to start Avante Consulting Solutions, which is now a successful business and technical services firm based in Nigeria and the U.K. In recognition of his business acumen, Slick P was also appointed as an associate lecturer specialising in project management at the School of Management, University of Surrey.
Finally in late 2006, Slick took the advice of many and started writing lyrics. In April 2007 he recorded his first song “Business Plan” with German rock band Radio Road West. He immediately went on tour with the band in the summer of 2007 delivering widely acclaimed stage performances at the massive Museum Festival, Frankfurt and other street festivals in Germany. He spent the last few years recording his first album working with highly respected producers such as Fliptyce, Ikon (Syndicate Records), Sosick, DJ Homeboy (Board Members Entertainment) and Chris Tucker (Radio Road West). Together they have come up with a debut Album that promises to be a masterpiece.
In July 2010, Slick P signed a management contract with one of Nigeria’s major record labels, Storm records. He released three singles ‘Jaiye’ ft Kiss and ‘International Citizen’ ft Ibiyemi in Oct 2011 and June 2012 under the famous label. The high class video of International Citizen was also released globally.
Slick has now started his own label called Board Members Entertainment (BME). The first single under BME is called Ji Mi Wo. Slick’s debut album called “International Citizen”, promises to be the most eclectic from any Nigerian hip-hop artist reflecting Slick P’s vast international exposure. Lyrics are delivered in English, Yoruba, Pigeon, German and Spanish. The music is a medley of genres from Naija Afro-beat, Jazz, Rock, American Hip-hop and U.K Funky House.
Slick P’s mission is to inspire, entertain and contribute to increasing Nigeria’s role in world music.
