There are few artists out there that are making the same kind of impact that rapper, Sho Madjozi has made in South African hip hop. The girl from Limpopo first caught our attention on a couple of Okmalumkoolkat features and since then she has blown up to become one of Mzansi’s most promising talents.
One thing we particularly love about her is the close bond that she has with her mother tongue, xiTsonga. She’s not shy to spit a few Tsonga lines here and there but she doesn’t lose any of her lyrical prowess or her strong deliver when she switches between languages.
However, even she didn’t realise how well this move would go down:
“I think that if you are Zulu, you put in a Zulu raps, if you’re Tswana then Tswana raps. So I didn’t think that it will be a big deal. I didn’t realise that it would be a big thing. And then it was, and that to me was a shock. I just thought that, well this is the language I speak and so that’s the language I’m going to rap in. Plus it sounds dope,” – Sho Madjozi to DJ Fresh
