South African music is in a fascinating space right now. On the one hand, it looks as if there’s no shortage of talent and opportunity for some of the biggest acts in the country. Once you blow up, there’s no limit to the heights you can reach. However, if you’re still “slept on” like some really gifted ladies and gents in this industry, then it can seem like there are many barriers getting in the way of your success.
One person who fits this bill is local rapper, Priddy Ugly who has been overlooked for longer than most of us can remember. Last week, however, Priddy told us all about the nasty side of South African music and we were absolutely shook by his revelation.
” I get to the place on Monday with my CD, we meet the guy and give him the CD, then he’s like ‘Ayt cool, you know the procedure right?’
By procedure I thought he meant is the song registered, is the song mixed and mastered, so I was like yeah I know the procedure. Then he’s like listen, man, we can make this song the biggest song in the country, in six months you can start winning awards, your ratings can go up, you can pay a deposit now of like R16,000 for 2 months airplay.”
